A warmer Earth
The world is getting warmer, I know, I know, this doesn't surprise anyone anymore, and most give a ****, but for the first time, I have made a simple statistical analysis to prove (mainly to myself) this.
Where did I get the data from? Monthly temperature anomalies recorded by the Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia, these anomalies are relative to a reference period (from 1961 to 1990). This data shows the variation of temperatures against a base, in this case, the mean of the records from the year 1961 to 1990.
What is the analysis about? Simple, graphing the bell curves for two ten-year period anomalies, 1998-2008 and 2008-2008 and a box and whisker chart for 40 years.
Bell Curve: we can clearly observe how both Variance and Median displace from one period to the other, it's meaning is quite simple. Shifting the median to the right says: get more sunscreen and cold beers, it's hot! The variance increase could be a recommendation that you better wear, every day, your winter coat, bathing suit, umbrella and boat, the weather is going to be unpredictable.
Box and whisker: isn't this the prettiest graph type you've ever seen? Well in here we can see a warmer trend, how? Pretty easy, the boxes tend to be taller every year: it's getting warm. The lines are the "whiskers," the longer the whiskers, the bigger the variance of the measurements: along with the umbrella and boat, it might also be an excellent day for a BBQ.
Show me the data. Next time someone tells you that climate change is a hoax, be aware of their crap, most likely this is the same people that do not believe in Darwin or vaccine their children, their allegations are based on imagination and not numbers, you choose which side you belong to.
